General information
Fishing fleet - General note
Monthly statistics of the fishing fleet of Chioggia from 1991 to present are reported. Raw data were retrieved from the Fleet Register of the European Union and then re-elaborated.
Data include:
Vessel length over all (LOA), in m;
Vessel gross tonnage (GT), in tonnes;
Engine power, in kW;
Year of construction of the vessel;
Fishing gears allowed to be employed by each vessel.
Users may select data (LOA, GT, kW, year of construction, fishing gear), the type of data (monthly, annual) and the period of interest.
Data may be differently visualized:
- Characteristics of the fishing vessels as average data (LOA, GT, kW) and total (GT, kW) for each month/year; users may include all the fishing gears or select some of them.
- Characteristics of the fishing vessels as ranges of values (LOA, GT, kW, year of construction); users may include all the fishing gears or select some of them.
- Total number of fishing vessels (or fishing gears).
Technical information on the construction of the database
Several choices have been made during data processing.
Fishing gear: most of the fishing vessels are allowed to employ two fishing gears, therefore both gears have been included in the database. As a consequence, if the users choose to visualize fishing gears, data refer to the total number of licenses, not to the total number of vessels.
Change of fishing gear, wreck or inclusion of a new fishing vessel: vessels/fishing gears have been included in the database proportional to the number of days of allowed activity.
Otter and beam trawlers were pooled in one category. The number of licenses for each of these two fishing gears, indeed, is not reliable if compared with the actual number of vessels known to employ each of the two gears.
In the oldest data (1991 – 2002) quantitative data on GT were missing for 129 vessels (the oldest ones). These data have been empirically estimated from the available data through the construction of a regression between GT and LOA. Web pages use also FLOT graphics libraries.
