Gene expression, defence molecules and host-pathogen interactions in bivalve molluscs
The analysis of available transcriptomes, genomes and gene pathways in marine bivalve molluscs helps the understanding of processes underpinning growth and re production, and in general the organism responses to environmental stimuli (from salinity and temperature changes to the presence of chemical contaminants, infective agents or microscopic parasites). In the case of edible bivalves of economic importance, the sequence data of DNA, RNA and proteins can support the identification of markers enabling the selection of the best animals or animals more resistant to diseases and current climate changes. The papers published to date reflect the objectives of research and innovation actions mainly supported by European funds, such as BIVALIFE; INNOVAQUA and now VIVALDI, on one hand, and the curiosity for molecules participating in the innate immunity of mussels and oysters, on the other. Namely, soluble and membrane receptors, signal transduction intermediates, effectors and regulators such as antimicrobial peptides and cytokines. In-depth study on host-pathogen interactions, for instance Crassostrea gigas and Ostreid herpesvirus-1 variants, and bivalve-associated microbiota can generate data useful to prevent diseases and mortalities, hence to sustain a production sector relevant to our future.
