European Biological Stations and the Study of Marine Life. The Case of the Hydrobiological Station in Chioggia (1940-1964)
From the 1870s onward, marine zoological stations played an important role in the history of biology and study of marine life. The project focuses on the lesser-known history of the Hydrobiological Station of Chioggia. The research aims at outlining the history of this Station during the direction of its founder Umberto D’Ancona from the foundation in 1940 to his death in 1964. We want to investigate its activities in the field of marine biology and fishery, and its relationship with the other Italian and foreign marine stations, retracing historical documents concerning the development of the Station.
