Since the XIX century, in the “Umberto D’Ancona” Hydrobiological Station in Chioggia, researchers from the Department of Biology, other departments of the University of Padova, and other Italian and international research institutes carry on several researches focused on the lagoon and coastal ecosystems of the area, in tight relation with the local socio-economic activities.
The Lagoon of Venice constitutes a unique environment and a natural lab to study the human-biodiversity-environmental changes interactions. The northern Adriatic Sea, characterized by a high productive and a strong historical anthropogenic pressure, constitutes an excellent environment for the study the interaction between fishery, marine resources and climate changes.
